The Dutch municipality of Baarle-Nassau has eight enclaves, seven of which are counter-enclaves. There are worldwide only eight counter-enclaves. Beside the seven counter-enclaves in Baarle there is only but one other counter-enclave which is part of the United Arabic Emirates, completely surrounded by an enclave of Oman.
The Dutch enclaves encompass an area of just over 15 hectare, the Belgian enclaves almost 234.5 hectare. The Dutch enclaves house a population of 69 or circa 1% of the population of Baarle-Nassau (2017). The Belgian enclaves are home to 2 251 inhabitants or over 83% of the population of Baarle-Hertog (2016).
2.6% of the population of Baarle-Nassau are of Belgian nationality whereas 45.6% of the population of Baarle-Hertog are Dutch nationals!
