The Death Wire Route is an interactive, recreational cycle route of 39 km. It takes you via cycle junctions to remarkable places from WWI history and crosses both Belgian and Dutch territory: Baarle-Hertog, Baarle-Nassau, Ravels, Merksplas and Hoogstraten.
Fifteen thematic photo boards along the route inform you about the WWI themes. Eleven spoken stories can be listened to with QR codes at the information boards. There are four reconstructions along the route: two sentry boxes and two reconstructions of the death wire, one of which has a switch house.
You can start the route at the following starting points:
1. Baarle-Hertog Town Hall, Parallelweg 1, 2387 Baarle-Hertog: information board 1 is located 50 metres away.
2. Café In Holland, Schootsenhoek 23, 5114 AC Baarle-Nassau (Castelré): information board 10 is located 200 metres away, at the reconstruction of a sentry box.
3. De Klapekster, Kolonie 41, 2323 Hoogstraten (Wortel): information board 11 is located 1.5 km away; follow cycle junctions 99 and 08.
4. VVV office, Markt 1, 2330 Merksplas. Access route total 9 km: follow the arrows to cycle junction 30 (Kapelstraat 9, 2330 Merksplas-Kolonie. Information board 10bis after 400 metres. Follow cycle junctions 34, 10, 99 and 08 to information board 11.
5. St. Rumolduskerk, Zondereigen 6, 2387 Baarle-Hertog (Zondereigen): information board 13 is located 500 metres further; follow cycle junction 81.
6. Stationsstraat 28, 2381 Ravels (Weelde-Station): information board 15 is located between Stationsstraat and the Bels Lijntje cycle path.
