Discover the railway

More than a century ago, an enormous station complex arose on the Bels Lijntje, the former railway between Turnhout and Tilburg, exactly on the national border. Dozens of tracks wide with a series of buildings of which the large border station was the most impressive. It wouldn't have looked out of place in a large provincial city. Without the large border station, the hamlet of Baarle-Grens (NL) and residential area Weelde-Statie (B) would not have existed, where there are still many reminders of the railway past.

Guides make the railway past tangible again on a walk over the large railway yard and through the neighborhood at the station. On the walk you imagine yourself a traveler waiting on the almost 400 meters long platform for the train (to Paris), you can imagine yourself at the well of the turntable how the locomotives were stored in the steam era and prepared for the new day. You'll be made aware of the half-timbering that leads a stream under the station and you'll walk past railway and customs houses (partly designated as national monuments) on both sides of the border, which still radiate the atmosphere of a century ago. Difference in architectural style makes it immediately clear on which side of the border you find yourself.

In addition to a general tour, you can also opt for a (longer if desired) tour in which the emphasis is more on the development of Baarle-Grens and Weelde-Statie.
